The Michela Balos School is a small school in a village on the outskirts of Bangalore, India. Born Foundation started it as a ministry to the people of that village that are migrant workers, mostly from the state of Tamil Nadu. Their business is a rock quarry, where they are breaking larger rocks into smaller ones for the purpose of construction. They are poor people, earning an average wage of the US equivalent of $30 per month. That is poverty even by Indian standards. Often, both the mother and father work in the quarry, either keeping their children with them in the quarry, or leaving them unattended. That leaves them very vulnerable to others that might abuse or exploit them. If they are left alone, then older siblings as young as 7 or 8 will be the caregivers for the still younger children.
